What are some herbal home remedies for a kid with a dry cough?

I’m taking him to the Dr. tomorrow, but wondered if there’s anything in the meantime that could help. It’s a dry cough that’s worse at night. He gets into coughing fits that are nearly making him throw up. No fever, no sniffles, no body aches. Just a nasty cough. Any suggestions?

Just plain salt water makes a good gargle to moisten the throat. Some people gargle with hydrogen peroxide, but don’t swallow it.

But my mother used to give us a mixture of honey and lemon juice for a cough.

    vicks, lemon tea, ginger tea.

Have him sleep in a reclined position (like on more pillows or in a recliner) instead of laying all the way down. It will keep the drainage from pooling at the back of his throat and will keep down the coughing.

Sounds like you could use a humidifier in his room at night. In terms of herbal remedies, red clover has a positive history of use in children with coughs.

Honey with double boiled asian pear juice will help. If you don’t have asian pear, honey will help a little bit. Hope your kid feel better soon.
